Rest is a Weapon (part 1): The Trap of Busyness

SCRIPTURE:
But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; but only one thing is necessary; for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

We live in a culture that celebrates hustle, hurry, and nonstop productivity. If you’re not constantly doing, striving, or achieving, the world whispers that you’re falling behind. But Scripture tells a very different story.

Rest is not weakness. Rest is not laziness. It is a spiritual weapon.

Rest is one of the most powerful ways we can push back against anxiety, confusion, and the enemy’s attempts to wear us down. Rest is a posture of trust – one that re-centers our hearts, sharpens our focus, and strengthens our spiritual authority.

The Trap of Busyness

Busyness is one of the enemy’s most subtle traps because it feels productive. It feels responsible. But underneath the surface, busyness often pulls us away from intimacy with God and keeps us operating on our own limited strength.

Jesus revealed this when He spoke to Martha in Luke chapter 10. Martha wasn’t doing anything sinful. She was serving. Yet she was serving from a place of stress, not presence. Mary, on the other hand, was seated at Jesus’ feet. She chose rest. She chose stillness. She chose connection over activity. And Jesus said that was the “better part.”

Busyness distracts. Rest focuses.
Busyness drains. Rest strengthens.
Busyness scatters our attention. Rest sharpens our spiritual sense so we can hear God clearly.

This is why the enemy doesn’t need to destroy you to immobilize you. He just needs to keep you busy.

PRAYER:
Father, thank You for loving me where I am. Today I choose to surrender my busyness to You. Teach me to seek the “better part”- to sit in Your presence and listen to Your voice, knowing with confidence and peace that every other thing that competes for my attention can wait. Even as I have to tend to certain things, teach me to do it from a heart posture of rest and shalom. Amen.
